Johnson County Jail Roster Overview
The official current-custody path is the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center inmate-search page. It frames the Public Safety Cloud JailTracker roster for Big Sandy. The facility serves Johnson, Lawrence, Magoffin, and Martin Counties, so the roster is broader than Johnson County alone. A Johnson County Sheriff's Office arrest, Paintsville Police arrest, Kentucky State Police arrest, court remand, or hold can still appear there after booking because Big Sandy is the local jail facility for Johnson County.
The roster is a custody tool. It helps show whether someone is currently held, recently booked, or listed by the fields the jail supplies. It does not replace the Johnson County Office of Circuit Court Clerk for official court records, and it does not cover all sentenced Kentucky prisoners after transfer. Use Kentucky Online Offender Lookup for sentenced state custody, BOP for federal prison custody, ICE ODLS for immigration detention, and VINELink for custody notifications when available.
Use the Johnson County Inmate Roster
A clean search starts with the least amount of information. Entering a last name and first name is usually better than guessing at a middle name, date, or agency filter. If the person was booked under a nickname, hyphenated name, or misspelled name, search less narrowly and then confirm by intake date, agency, and identifying fields. The roster includes a public disclaimer, and the facility determines what content is shown.
- Open the official Big Sandy inmate-search frame or the direct JailTracker route.
- Accept the public roster disclaimer if it appears.
- Search by last name first, then add first name or middle name if the list is too broad.
- Use offender ID, permanent ID, intake date range, or agency if those details are known.
- Open the result row and review the detail panels for status, image availability, VINE link, and any charge or hold table supplied by the jail.
- If no record appears, call Big Sandy at 606-297-5245 before assuming the person was released.
Johnson County Roster Search Fields
JailTracker's field set is useful because Big Sandy is a regional jail. An agency filter, if enabled, can help distinguish Johnson County custody from another member county. Intake-date fields help when a person was recently arrested. Released-search fields depend on agency configuration, so they may not always be visible to the public.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Name | Text | No | Can be searched with the Enter key. |
| Last Name | Text | No | Best starting field for most searches. |
| Middle Name | Text | No | Helps sort common names. |
| Gender | Dropdown | No | Options depend on agency configuration. |
| Offender Id | Text | No | Agency offender number. |
| Permanent Id | Text | No | Permanent agency number used in some VINE links. |
| Intake Date Range | Two date fields | No | Narrows the list by jail intake date. |
| Release Date Range | Two date fields | No | Visible only when released search is enabled. |
| Type | Dropdown | No | May include All, Active, and Released. |
| Agency | Dropdown | No | Useful in a multi-county regional jail. |
Johnson County Inmate Profile Fields
A Big Sandy roster detail can be short or detailed depending on what the facility provides to JailTracker. The application source supports images, offender IDs, intake and release dates, status, VINE links, and expandable detail sections. If a charge, bond, or housing item is not shown, the next step is a call to the jail or a records request to the custodian that holds the record.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| First, Middle, Last Name | The person's name as stored by the jail or roster vendor. |
| Agency | The member county or agency field, if the jail has configured it. |
| Gender | Shown only if the agency enables gender options. |
| Offender Id | Jail or agency identifier for the booking record. |
| Permanent Id | Longer-term agency identifier that may be used by VINE. |
| Intake Date | The date the person entered Big Sandy custody. |
| Release Date | Shown when released-search records are enabled and a release exists. |
| Status | Active, released, or supervision-style custody status when supplied. |
| Photo/Image | A booking image, secure image route, or Image not available message. |
| DetailsJson sections | Facility-supplied name/value panels or tables, often where charges, holds, or bonds appear. |

Johnson County Jail Records Requests
When a booking record is not available through the public roster, the next step is a records request to the agency that keeps the record. Kentucky's open-records process is not a question-and-answer service. Johnson County Fiscal Court's open-records instructions say public agencies provide existing responsive records and are not required to compile information. A useful request should name the person, date of birth if known, arrest or intake date, arresting agency, and any offender ID or permanent ID shown by JailTracker.
The county open-records page lists a local fee of 25 cents per released page and says photos, CDs, videotapes, and diskettes vary from $2 to $3 apiece. It also says a written response is due within three days, excluding weekends and legal holidays, beginning the day after receipt. Prosecutor records in the Johnson County Attorney's custody use that office's written and signed request process, while court records after filing belong with the circuit court clerk.
| Record Needed | Best Starting Point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Current custody confirmation | Big Sandy roster or jail phone line | The jail controls current intake and release status. |
| Historical booking record | Big Sandy or the official records custodian | The online roster may not expose older details. |
| Filed charges or disposition | Johnson County Office of Circuit Court Clerk | The court record, not the jail roster, is the official case file. |
| Prosecutor office records | Johnson County Attorney open-records route | That office requires written, signed requests for records in its custody. |
Johnson County Booking and Intake
A Johnson County arrest usually moves from law enforcement custody to Big Sandy intake. Jail staff create or update the offender ID and permanent ID, record the name and agency information, assign an intake date, handle property, complete screening and classification, and enter the person into the jail system. JailTracker can show an image when the facility supplies one, but an image is not guaranteed on every record.
After booking, the court side begins. The Big Sandy FAQ tells families to use the Court Dockets tab for court dates, and Johnson County court schedules are maintained through Kentucky Court of Justice resources. A jail roster intake date is not the same as a court filing date. For formal case records, use the Johnson County Office of Circuit Court Clerk.
Johnson County Jail and DOC Records
Current regional jail records, sentenced state records, federal records, and immigration records sit in different systems. This distinction prevents many false negatives. A person missing from the roster may have bonded out, been released on recognizance, moved to DOC custody, transferred to another county, or been held by a federal agency.
| Custody | Where to Look | Record Type |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or local jail hold | Big Sandy JailTracker roster | Intake, status, agency, IDs, and jail-supplied details. |
| Sentenced Kentucky offender | Kentucky Online Offender Lookup | DOC ID, location, offense, sentence, and custody data when available. |
| Federal prisoner | Federal Bureau of Prisons locator | Federal custody location and release-date fields, with no public mugshots. |
| Immigration detainee | ICE Online Detainee Locator System | A-number or biographical search for ICE custody after transfer. |
Johnson County Jail Visitation Records
Big Sandy's official visitation page is brief. It states that video visitation is weekly from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. It does not publish a per-pod schedule, visit length, visitor approval procedure, or separate dress-code list in the research. Confirm the current visit process with the facility before making plans, especially if the person was just booked or may be under a hold.
The official Big Sandy visitation page is the source for the weekly video visitation window.
The limited posted schedule makes the jail phone line the practical fallback for visit setup questions.
| Facility | Schedule | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Sandy Regional Detention Center | Weekly, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. | Video visitation | Official page does not publish per-pod times. |
| Attorney visits | Not published | Call facility | Use 606-297-5245 for current instructions. |
| On-site public visitation | Not separately published | Not confirmed | The official source only states video visitation. |
Johnson County Inmate Funds
Big Sandy links inmate phones to CIDNET and commissary deposits to TouchPay. The official commissary page says a person who is not already on the inmate contact list must email administrator@bsrdc.com with the inmate name, the depositor's cardholder name, gender, relationship to the inmate, and address. If the person was already added to the contact list recently or in the past, the setup email is not required.
| Service | Provider or Route | Published Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Inmate phones | CIDNET | Linked from the Big Sandy site. |
| Commissary deposits | TouchPay | Used for funding inmate accounts. |
| Contact-list setup | administrator@bsrdc.com | Email inmate and cardholder details if not on the contact list. |
| Deposit fees | TouchPay | Fee schedule was not published on the Big Sandy page. |
Note: Confirm custody with Big Sandy before sending money because release, transfer, or a hold can change the correct account path.
